What feline association am I a member of?

‘The health and welfare of each individual cat or kitten must be the primary concern of all breeders and owners of cats and kittens.’

Art.1 of the FIFé Breeder Regulations

Every serious breeder registers his cattery and breeding stock with a feline association. In addition to a matter of seriousness, it is a matter of compliance with Italian laws: for the Ministry of Environmental Policy, in fact, only cats with pedigrees can be defined as purebred cats. Besides compliance with the law being part of a feline association is important if one has an ethical and respectful breeding project for the cat, and this is for several reasons.

-Being part of a feline association ensures that you can register your litters and have a pedigree for each kitten. The pedigree in addition to indicating the genealogy of the cat (and allowing the breeder to understand what kind of cat he is selecting based on ancestry) is a guarantee that the female cats will not be exploited. In fact, each broodmare cannot have more than 3 litters in three years to avoid exploitation. NO pedigrees are issued for puppies whelped by cows that have exceeded 3 litters in 24 months.

We would like to point out that the pedigree has a derisory price (about 15 €) and that therefore whoever offers you a cat at a higher price with pedigree and lower without in addition to not complying with the law (and is therefore cheating you) may have exceeded the number of litters allowed (and is therefore exploiting their own cats, hateful behavior and contrary to any ethical breeding).

-Feline associations organize expos, and in expos judges rate our cats: this is essential to understand if one's selection work is in line with the standard of that association. In expos you also see other breeders of our breed, and this is essential for comparison and openness to new lines with a view to reinvigorating your own breed.

-Associations offer a training program for their members: for example, the master feline breeder sponsored biannually by ANFI or AFeF's yearly “Feliniamo” webinar series. This allows breeders to continually renew their education and expand their knowledge of feline technology.

-Associations are in the business of obtaining agreements with genetic testing laboratories for animals, so as to facilitate the work of breeders in eliminating/arguing known breed genetic diseases.

-Feline associations usually have a code of ethics or set of rules that must be adhered to in order to be a member. These rules cover a variety of aspects regarding respect for the cat, such as the surrender of kittens (no association allows kittens to be surrendered before 12 weeks of age, averting premature removal from their mother), the welfare conditions to which all cats in the cattery must be subjected, or the obligation to inoculate the microchip as an act of responsibility towards their cats.

-Feline associations periodically meet with the Ministry through the TC (technical committee) to keep up to date on animal welfare and breeding conditions.

The feline association of which I am a member at international level is FIFé (Féderation Internationale Féline), while at national level I am a member of ENFI (Ente Nazionale Felineotecnica Italiana): obviously the exact same litter is entered in both registers, as the microchip shown on the pedigree attests. Both associations have a very strict code of ethics for breeders: in the case of - a few - different rules, I obviously opt for the stricter one, respecting the regulations. I give an example on the age at which kittens can leave the nest: ENFI sets 12 weeks as the minimum limit, FIFé 14 weeks. My kittens, therefore, do not leave my home before 14 weeks.

-I chose to be part of the large international FIFé family because I consider it important to have an international network of breeders with whom I can compare myself. I also consider it serious to be part of a group of breeders operating worldwide, as all cat and dog breeds are the result of global selection, precisely in order to expand the gene pool, which would otherwise be depleted in a short time. In particular, I like FIFé because it is known worldwide for its litter registration rules, which are very strict and strict.

-At national level, I chose ENFI because an Italian cat registry allows me to give each of my kitten a state-recognised pedigree, in compliance with the law. Being part of an Italian club also allows me to transpose and implement any new regulations on breeding rules.

The Ente Nazionale Felinotecnica Italiana encourages and supports breeding based on sound ethical principles,

essential for every breeder and owner.

Art. 1 of the Technical Regulation for ENFI breeders

FEDERATION INTERNATIONAL FELINE

-FIFé is the oldest European feline organization: in fact, it was founded in 1951 by feline clubs from Italy, Belgium and France.

-FIFé is active worldwide with national clubs in 40 countries.

-FIFé organizes the prestigious WORLD SHOW each year, where more than 1550 cats from all parts of the world flock.

ENFI - ENTE NAZIONALE FELINOTECNICA ITALIANA

(Italian National Feline Body)

- ENFI was founded in 2015 and is the first independent feline club in Italy.

-The ENFI is authorised by MASAF (Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry) to issue pedigrees for purebred cats (as it happens with ENCI for dogs): ENFI pedigrees are therefore recognised by the Italian state.

-The ENFI through its regional clubs is present throughout Italy and organises at least six annual cat shows.

- ENFI has made important international agreements such as with LOOF (Livre Officiel des Origines Félines), the only French body authorised to issue pedigrees for purebred cats on French soil.
